Goldfields - Ballarat

Ballarat

In 1851, two prospectors panned a few ounces of gold at Canadian creek that produced the world’s biggest alluvial gold rush, Ballarat sat astride the world’s largest deposit of alluvial gold, and almost a third of all gold found in the colony was wrenched from its rich quartz reefs.

Discover the legacy of the Ballarat gold rush, still evident in the magnificent architecture along Lydiard & Sturt Streets, as well as the tree-line streets, Lake Wendouree, parks, gardens, statues, and churches of the city today.

Ballarat also made it mark as the site of Australia’s only armed civil rebellion when in 1854 goldminers at the Eureka Stockade stood up against an unjust colonial rule.

Ballarat is filled with countless reminders of the day when it seemed half the world had set sail for the Victorian Goldfields.
